JUMP SHOT-

A shot in which the cue ball is struck from above at a 45 degree angle driving it into the table and then bouncing it over an object ball.

The jump shot is an advanced and often necessary technique in billiards, employed when the cue ball's direct path to an object ball is obstructed by another ball. Instead of attempting a complex kick or bank, a jump shot involves elevating the cue stick to a steep angle (typically 40-50 degrees) and striking the cue ball downwards into the table. This downward force causes the cue ball to rebound off the slate and momentarily "jump" over the obstructing ball, ideally landing cleanly on the other side to make contact with the intended object ball. A legal jump shot is characterized by a clean downward strike, where the cue ball bounces off the table; illegally "scooping" the cue ball by hitting underneath it is a foul in most rule sets. Mastering the jump shot requires a precise, short, and controlled "punch" stroke rather than a powerful swing, as well as an understanding of how to hit the cue ball slightly below its vertical center (from your elevated perspective) to achieve the necessary lift and control its landing for subsequent position play.
