SANDBAGGING-

Deliberately playing below one's actual ability in order to fool opponents into accepting higher stakes bets, or to lower one's competitive rating in order to play with a higher handicap and consequently have a better chance to win.

"Sandbagging" in billiards refers to the unethical practice of intentionally playing below one's true skill level to gain an unfair advantage, particularly in handicapped league play or gambling situations. This can involve deliberately missing easy shots, taking more turns (innings) than necessary, or even losing games on purpose to keep one's handicap artificially low. The goal is to deceive opponents or the league's handicapping system into believing a player is less skilled than they actually are, ensuring better odds or a more favorable handicap in future matches. While it can be difficult to definitively prove, sandbagging is widely considered a form of cheating that undermines the integrity of fair competition and is actively discouraged by most amateur leagues, with measures like tracking "defensive shots" and handicap advisory committees in place to identify and address such behavior.
