KICK SHOT-
A shot in which the cue ball is driven into a rail before striking the object ball.
A kick shot is a more advanced billiards technique where the cue ball is intentionally driven into one or more rails before making contact with the object ball. This is typically used when the cue ball's direct path to the object ball is obstructed by other balls, or when it's a strategic move to set up a challenging position. Like bank shots, kick shots fundamentally rely on the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection principle, meaning the angle at which the cue ball hits the rail will dictate its rebound angle. However, factors like stroke speed and especially the application of english (side spin) on the cue ball can significantly alter this reflected angle. Players often utilize various "diamond systems" or visual cues on the table to estimate the precise point on the rail where the cue ball needs to hit to reach the target object ball. Mastering the kick shot requires a keen understanding of rail dynamics and extensive practice to develop the finesse needed to control the cue ball's trajectory after it rebounds.
