SPEED CONTROL-

The act of striking the cue ball at different speeds so that it travels the desired distance on the table in order to gain positioning of your next shot.

Speed control, or cue ball control, is arguably the most challenging yet crucial aspect of high-level billiards, as it dictates the cue ball's final resting place and, consequently, your setup for the next shot. It's not just about pocketing the object ball; it's about placing the cue ball precisely where you need it for an optimal follow-up shot. The primary levers for speed control are the length of your backswing and the acceleration of your stroke. A shorter, more deliberate backswing with smooth acceleration will produce a softer shot, while a longer backswing with consistent acceleration generates more power. Avoid decelerating into the cue ball, as this leads to unpredictable results and a loss of control. Mastering speed control also involves understanding how different types of spin (draw, follow, stun) and contact points affect the cue ball's post-impact trajectory and speed. Constant practice through drills that challenge your ability to send the cue ball to specific locations on the table, ranging from rolling it just barely to a rail to precisely setting up combinations, is essential for developing this critical "feel" for the table.
